Your Right to Unemployment Compensation Who can get unemployment compensation? You can, if you have been laid off or fired through no fault of your own, or if you had very good reasons that forced you to quit your job; have earned enough wages to qualify for benefits; are able to work and are available for work at another job suitable to your skills, education or training; register for work as part of your unemployment compensation claim; put in a claim for benefits by telephone or Internet each week that you are able to work and are available for work.
You must meet all of these requirements to get benefits. How can I find out if I can get benefits? The Referee Hearing If you appeal a decision of the local Unemployment Compensation Service Center, or if your employer appeals, a referee will be assigned to hold a hearing, which is like a trial but somewhat less formal.
Appeals to the Board of Review If the referee decides that you cannot collect benefits, you may appeal that decision to the Unemployment Compensation Board of Review. The benefits will be automatically added to to your claim. You will also receive a determination in the mail about your EB benefits.
When PEUC ends, your claim should be automatically switched to the Extended Benefits EB program if you have not already collected those benefits within the last year. If you are unable to file online, you can request the government mail you a paper application that you can return through the mail. When you log in to file your biweekly claim, your account will say it is inactive. Note: A determination regarding your separation from employment could take weeks, so continue to file your biweekly claims during that time.
The first week of the benefit year that you are unemployed and otherwise eligible for benefits is called the "waiting week. For the duration of the pandemic emergency declaration, the waiting week requirement was temporarily suspended for all UC claimants and that week became a paid compensable week.
As of September 5, , the unpaid waiting week is reinstated. You should have received a Notice of Determination from the UC service center stating you are eligible for benefits. You can easily view and print your benefit payment history Wednesdays through Fridays.
Most public service agencies accept this printout for eligibility purposes. Generally, claimants are not eligible for UC benefits while out of the country because they are out of their local labor market. However, there are a few exceptions. If you were out of the country during any part of a week, please indicate that fact when filing your biweekly claims. Fact finding will need to be conducted to determine your eligibility.
You need to have a minimum of 18 credit weeks in your base year to be eligible for any amount of benefits. Only persons with Social Security Numbers ending in an odd number may call on Mondays. Only persons with SSNs ending in an even number may call on Tuesdays. All claimants may call on Thursdays and Fridays.

You should apply for unemployment compensation benefits as soon as you possibly can after losing or leaving your job. The UC Service Center will interview you and your former employer to determine if you should receive unemployment compensation.
