When was the powered aeroplane invented

One of the most influential was the English gentleman scientist George Cayley , who would arguably have gone one better than his contemporary Stringfellow and achieved powered human flight a full 50 years before Wilbur and Orville — if only the engine technology had been up to the job. This did not discourage Cayley, even though his contemporaries thought he was bonkers. In he published a design for an aeroplane and also the earliest description of the aerodynamic forces on a wing that would enable it to fly.

His three-part treatise Aerial Navigation , published in and , was greeted with scepticism. He had completed a series of experiments to back up his calculations and was convinced that he had cracked the problem of powered flight. Cayley constructed increasingly sophisticated flying machines, culminating in a full-scale glider which his grandson, George, flew across a shallow valley near Scarborough in Yorkshire in The craft had fixed wings and a rudimentary tail, plus a rudder at the rear to steer with.

What it lacked was an engine — a device which he had spent many fruitless years trying to develop. Always the glass-half-full type, he opted for a glider instead. The Wright brothers also cited two other pioneers as important influences on their achievement. These wings achieved levels of lift that no other experimenter had dreamed of.

Lilienthal made numerous glider flights from various jumping-off places, including a specially-constructed metre hill near his home on the outskirts of Berlin. He did not set an official record, however. Sign up now to learn about This Day in History straight from your inbox. Tolkien, opens in theaters.
